WWE Backlash 2009

Here is a preview of WWE Backlash with predictions included.

C.M. Punk vs. Kane

These two were recently drafted to Smackdown. This should be a decent match as Punk has a very entertaining and athletic style, while Kane is one of the more athletic big men in the WWE. Punk beat Kane out in the Money in the Bank Ladder Match at Wrestlemania and then beat him again on Raw this week, while Kane beat him in a tag match on WWE Superstars. If they hope to rebuild Kane as a monster heel on Smackdown, he needs to win here. Punk has a world title match in his back pocket and really doesn’t need the win here.

Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat vs. Chris Jericho

Jericho, who was recently drafted to Smackdown, continues his feud with WWE legends this Sunday against Ricky Steamboat. Steamboat has looked pretty good in a couple of tag matches and it will be interesting to see if he can hold his own in a 1 on 1 match. Jericho is a consumate pro and can have a good match with just about anyone. Steamboat was one of the best pure wrestlers in his prime and he still has something left. This should be a fairly entertaining match. The legends rarely beat the current superstars and a loss here would kill Jericho’s momentum, so expect him to come out on top.

Jeff Hardy vs. Matt Hardy (I Quit Match)

These two real-life brothers will go at it once again. This has been an entertaining feud featuring an “extreme rules match,” a “stretcher match” and it will now culminate with an “I quit match.” The stipulation is a little unusual since neither of these two is a submission wrestler. However, these two pros are likely to put on another good match. Matt is on the biggest roll of his career and is on the verge of breaking into the main-event picture. A loss would kill his momentum so he needs another win here. Don’t expect Jeff to say “I quit,” though. That would make him look weak. Expect Matt to win on a referee stoppage.

Christian vs. Jack Swagger (ECW Title Match)

Nice to see the ECW title defended on pay per view. For some reason, it was not defended at Wrestlemania. Swagger is a very good young wrestler with a lot of potential, while Christian is a cagey veteran with a very entertaining style based on his great athleticism. If this is given enough time, it should be a nice match. Swagger has had very few successful title defenses and he needs a big pay per view win over a credible opponent. Expect him to pick up a dubious win.

Edge vs. John Cena (World Title Last Man Standing Match)

These two will write another chapter in their great rivalry. These two, along with the Big Show, are coming off a very strong match at Wrestlemania. They have great chemistry and always put on a fun match. Expect an entertaining back and forth match with numerous 8 and 9 counts. This type of match favors Cena and it is hard to pick against him in a big match, but considering the fact that Smackdown has no world title right now, expect the ultimate oportunist Edge to somehow figure out a way to pull it out and bring the title back to Smackdown.

Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, Ted Dibiase vs. HHH, Batista, Shane McMahon (WWE Title Match)

The stipulations in this match are that if anyone on Orton’s team pins anyone on HHH’s team, Orton wins the title, and if anyone on HHH’s team gets counted out or disqualified, Orton also wins the title. Wouldn’t expect a very good match here. Batista is likely to have some rust, Shane is a part-timer, Rhodes and Dibiase have never been in such a high profile match, and Orton and HHH had a very lackluster match at Wrestlemania. That’s not a good formula for a quality match. They have teased the possibility of Orton winning the title on a DQ but that would not be a good idea as it would make him look weak as the new champion. If he beat someone other than HHH, it would also make him look weak. Considering the fact that he beat HHH on Raw, don’t expect HHH to lay down for him once again. HHH’s team will win but someone other than Orton will take the loss in order to keep him as a strong challenger.
