Mumbai Indians wins Nokia Champions League T20 2011

It was one of the memorable evening for the Mumbai Indians team and their fans. They wouldn’t have asked for anything better than winning their first ever champions trophy. It was great achievement for the Mumbai based IPL franchise who missed the cup in previous occasion and now they were playing without their star players.

Mumbai Indians win CLT20 2011
After winning the toss and managing to put only 139 runs on the board, the victory seemed out of reach for the injury-hit Mumbai Indians, especially when RCB were 38/0 after four overs in reply. But they held their nervous and turned on their spin power which eventually won the game for them. Even the Gayle force and Elegant Kohli had no answers to Mumbai Indians bowlers on the slow and turning Chennai pitch which was completely different from Bangalore. Finally Mumbai Indians beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by 31 runs in the final of the Nokia Champions League T20 tournament.

The CLT20 is a tournament that many people say is in jeopardy of being dropped from the calendar but most will agree that this year’s edition was a blockbuster hit in entertainment. The standard was high, the games were really competitive, very little separated the sides and it ran high on entertainment value.

According to me, the CLT20 is a far more facinating and appealing tournament than the IPL. The main reason being two or three weeks of daily T20 is manageable, but six weeks is definetely not.

India wins test series against West Indies

Third test match between India and West indies has ended in a disappointing manner.

Chanderpaul’s fighting century denied the test win for team India.

India ended the caribbean series with 1-0 victory. It was a well deserved series win for India, without 5 of their top guns. Raina and Ishant Sharma were the standout performer for India in the series. Dravid and Laxman were their usual consistent self and with all of the top 5 coming back for the England series, India would back themselves to beat them despite playing under alien conditions.

Ishant Sharma declared the Man of the Series for his match haul of 22 wickets @16.86.

“This is my first Man of the series and I am very happy with this effort. The pitch here was slow and flat but we needed to put in the effort. I am very confident ahead of the England tour and I am glad I am playing in the Test squad. ” Ishant said

Shivnarine Chanderpaul is the Man of the Match for his 23rd Test century.

Speaking after the match he said, “I was frustrated with getting out in the 20s and 30s in the whole series. However, I was happy that I hung in there and I got to the century. I was speaking to Kirk and it was in the back of my mind. It is a honour to be the most capped player and it shows what hard work can do. I heard it when I was playing and I would like to thank the people of Dominica and the Prime Minister for giving me honorary citizenship of Dominica. ”

West Indies captain Darren Sammy ” I am very pleased with the result. I would like to thank the people of Dominica for coming out in large numbers. I felt I was playing a T20 match. The public still loves us and I was glad that they support us. We were a bowler short but we showed a lot of character. We have been asking the batting to step up all summer and Kirk Edwards came to the party. Shiv proved today that he is still one of the best batsman in the side. Dropped catches do happen in a series but we did not score enough runs in the first innings. The guys know what is required and it is good to see that we are going in the right direction. I was surprised that India opted for the draw as the third wicket fell. ”

Next mission for team India will be against mighty opponents England who have been playing well against Sri Lanka

Will Kolkata’s Prince be Kochi king?

Eleven days after the auctioneer brought down his hammer for the last time at IPL players’ auction in Bangalore, a ray of hope has emerged for Sourav Ganguly, who was ignored by all the 10 franchises.

Team Kochi, which will be making its IPL debut in the ensuing T20 event, have belatedly realised their folly and are keen to take Ganguly on board. The Kochi management, who clearly showed no aptitude for team composition and failed to net a single capped Indian batsman other than VVS Laxman, have approached the Governing Council to allow them to sign the former India captain. However, they can do so only if the other nine franchises raise no objection to this out-of-auction deal.

The BCCI, on its part, has no objection. “If the franchises have no objection, why should we stand in any player’s way to play in the IPL? However, there is no question of bending the rule or making an exception,” said a Governing Council member.

IPL rules state that capped players put up for auction, can only be bought through an open bidding process. Ganguly, along with Mumbai captain Wasim Jaffer and Punjab pacer VRV Singh were the only three Indian players to remain unsold at the end of the two-day auction.

The onus is clearly now on Kochi bosses to convince the other franchises to let them take Ganguly on board. Having rejected the southpaw outright at the auction, it is hard to fathom why the other franchises would object to Kochi hiring Ganguly – unless, of course, they are bent upon keeping Dada away from IPL.

If the Kochi deal works out, Sourav can look forward to joining forces with his old KKR mates Brendon McCullum, Brad Hodge and Owais Shah and one-time Sri Lankan foes of Mahela Jayawardene and Muttiah Muralitharan.
