World’s tallest tower to open for public on Dec 2

world's tallest towerDubai: The world’s tallest building Burj Dubai will be thrown open to the public on December 2, to coincide with UAE’s National Day.

The opening date of the building has been a closely guarded secret for years – however, a senior architect working on the project has confirmed that December 2 has been set aside for the opening, the Arabian Business reported.

The Armani Hotel, which is part of the building, will welcome its first guests on the same day.

Ceremonies to mark the launch are also being planned for December 2, the report said but it was not yet clear whether other parts of the tower will be fully accessible.

“This will be a huge achievement and a big celebration for the UAE and for Emaar, particularly as it’s UAE National Day. It will be the first time the public can enter the building,” said the architect.

The final piece of glass cladding to complete the exterior of Burj Dubai, was now ready and would be installed within weeks, developer Emaar Properties said. Emaar, however, has maintained it will not comment on the opening date.

Spanning six metres in length, the panel is the last of the 24,348 pieces of cladding fitted to the super-structure.

Emaar has been tight-lipped over the final height of the tower, which is believed to have topped 818 metres earlier this year. More than 1,000 specially commissioned pieces of art will adorn the interiors of Burj Dubai.

Pride of the place in the iconic structure’s residential lobby will be held by an artwork featuring 196 bronze and brass alloy cymbals – representing the 196 countries of the world – suspended on titanium rods anchored at the bottom of two pools.

Visitors to the lobby will be able to hear a distinct musical sound as the cymbals, which are plated with 18-carat gold, are struck by dripping water intended to mimic the sound of water falling on leaves.

Palin Steps Down as Alaska Governor

Sarah Palin stepped down Sunday as Alaska governor to write a book and build a right-of-center coalition, but she left her long-term political plans unclear and refused to address speculation she would seek a 2012 presidential bid.

Palin Resigning

In a fiery campaign-style speech, Palin said she was stepping down to take her political battles to a larger if unspecified stage and avoid an unproductive, lame duck status.

“With this decision, now, I will be able to fight even harder for you, for what is right, and for truth. And I have never felt that you need a title to do that,” Palin said to raucous applause from about 5,000 people gathered at Pioneer Park in downtown Fairbanks.

Her first order of business as a private citizen is to speak Aug. 8 at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California. She also wants to campaign for political candidates from coast to coast, and continue to speak her mind on the social networking site Twitter, one of her favorite venues to reach out to supporters.

Free speech was a theme of her farewell speech at a crowded picnic in Fairbanks, as the outgoing governor scolded “some seemingly hell bent on tearing down our nation” and warned Americans to “be wary of accepting government largess. It doesn’t come free.”

She also took aim at the media, saying her replacement, Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell, “has a very nice family too, so leave his kids alone!”

And she told the media: “How about, in honor of the American soldier, you quit makin’ things up?”

She didn’t elaborate, but Palin said when she announced her resignation July 3 that she was tired of the media focus on her family and felt she had been unfairly treated by reporters and bloggers.

Friend and foe alike have speculated that Palin may host a radio or TV show, launch a lucrative speaking career or seek higher office in Washington.

Palin hasn’t ruled out any of those options, and her political action committee, SarahPAC, has raised more than $1 million, said Meghan Stapleton, a spokeswoman for the committee and the Palin family.

Stapleton said Palin is still deciding what her future will be.

“I cannot express enough there is no plan after July 26. There is absolutely no plan,” she told The Associated Press.

Palin’s surprise announcement she was stepping down 17 months before the end of her first term pushed her favorability rating down to 40 percent, according to a Washington Post-ABC poll. Fifty-three percent of those polled gave her an unfavorable rating.

Last summer, almost six in 10 Americans viewed her favorably. The latest poll was taken July 15-18.

Nearly 20 ethics complaints had been filed against Palin, and the outgoing governor cited the resulting investigation’s financial toll – both on her and the state – for stepping down. An independent investigator looking into the complaints found evidence she may have violated ethics laws by trading on her position as she sought money for lawyer fees, according to a report obtained recently by The Associated Press.

Prabhakaran alive, claims pro-LTTE website

Tamil Tigers chief Velupillai Prabhakaran is “alive and safe”, a website sympathetic to the rebels claimed Tuesday.

The Sri Lankan military Monday said that Prabhakaran was shot dead while fleeing the battle zone in the island’s north.prabakaran

Prabhakaran, the feared leader of Sri Lanka’s ruthless Tamil Tigers, was killed Monday with two top aides, ending one of the world’s longest running insurgencies that bled the island nation for over a quarter century, the military declared.

While rejecting Colombo’s claim of Prabhakaran being killed, and “assuring his safety and well-being”, LTTE’s International Relations Head S. Pathmanathan Tuesday accused Colombo of treachery in the killing of the political wing leaders B. Nadesan and S. Puleedevan.

There was no independent confirmation of the report in the pro-LTTE website TamilNet. Sri Lankan officials have in the past denounced as propaganda similar claims by TamilNet.

Pathmanathan in the statement said: “I wish to inform the global Tamil community distressed witnessing the final events of the war that our beloved leader Velupillai Pirapaharan is alive and safe. He will continue to lead the quest for dignity and freedom for the Tamil people.”

Categorically rejecting Prabhakaran’s death claims, he asked “the Tamil community to be vigilant and to exercise maximum restraint whilst grieving for the loss of Tamil civilian lives in the barbaric conduct of the final chapters of this battle”.

Prabhakaran’s face apparently caught fire and he breathed his last in a small stretch of land near the coast in Mullaitivu district, an area about 400 km from here which he had made his hideout a long time ago, building seemingly impregnable underground bunkers.

The reported death – which came hours after his elder son Charles Anthony, who headed the group’s IT wing and was being groomed to succeed him, was also killed – marks the collapse of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), which Prabhakaran set up in 1976 and which became one of the most well-armed and ruthless insurgent groups in the world with its own army, navy and air force.

It also came three days before the 18th anniversary of the assassination of former Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was blown up by a woman Tamil Tiger suicide bomber at an election rally near Chennai in India May 21, 1991.

Sri Lankan army chief, Lt Gen Sarath Fonseka, told state-owned TV: “We have now completed our task of liberating the north and east from terrorists.” Fonseka was badly wounded when an LTTE suicide bomber sneaked into the fortified army headquarters in Colombo and tried to blow him up.

Also reportedly killed Monday with Prabhakaran was Shanmugalingam Shivashankar alias Pottu Amman, the dreaded chief of the intelligence wing that was responsible for all the high profile assassinations the Tigers carried out in its long and murderous history.

Other key LTTE leaders whose bodies were found Monday were Soosai, the LTTE’s naval wing leader, Balasingham Nadesan, who headed its political wing, S. Puleedevan, head of the Peace Secretariat, Ramesh, a military leader, Ilango, chief of the LTTE police, and Kapil Amman from the LTTE intelligence wing.

LTTE Leader Prabhakaran Killed And Body Found

Sri Lanka’s state television announced on Monday that Tamil Tiger rebel chief Velupillai Prabhakaran has been killed. However, there is no official confirmation of his death.Prabhakaran’s death would spell the end of a more than three-decade quest by the rebel leader for a separate state for minority Tamils across northern and eastern Sri Lanka.

Rupavahini television, the state broadcaster, broke into its regular programming on Monday afternoon to announce Prabakharan’s death. They gave no details of how he was killed.

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan Army Chief Lt Gen Sareth Fonseka has said that troops have defeated the last pockets of rebel resistance in the north and are working to identify Prabhakaran’s body from among the dead.

The government information department also sent a text message to cell phones across the country announcing Prabhakaran was killed along with his top deputies.

High alert has been sounded in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo after Prabhakaran’s death.

Sri Lanka military has also announced that it has now controlled all of country’s territory.

Earlier, Sri Lankan military officials had informed that Prabhakaran was killed by government forces this morning.

Two officials had confirmed Prabhakaran’s death. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the media.

Prabhakaran and two of his top commanders, know as Soosai and Pottu Amman, drove in an armour-plated van accompanied by a bus filled with armed rebels toward approaching Sri Lankan forces Monday morning, the officials said. A two-hour firefight broke out before the military launched a rocket at the van, the officials said.

Troops pulled Prabhakaran’s body from the van and identified it as that of the rebel leader, they said.

“It was confirmed Prabhakaran was killed when trying to flee in an ambulance before dawn. We are waiting for the official announcement by the President,” a military source said on condition of anonymity.

Earlier in the day, four senior rebel leaders were killed in fighting.

They included the head of the Tigers’ political wing, Balasingham Nadesan, the head of rebels’ peace secretariat Seevaratnam Puleedevan, and a military leader known as Ramesh.

The Army also says it has found the body of Prabhakaran’s son, Charles Anthony.

Sri Lanka’s hawkish President, Mahinda Rajapakse, will open a new session of Parliament on Tuesday with an address that will officially mark the ending of the war.

The conflict has left more than 70,000 dead from pitched battles, suicide attacks, bomb strikes and assassinations. The LTTE emerged in the 1970s, with all-out war breaking out in the early 1980s.

The capital Colombo, which has been frequently hit by Tiger suicide attacks over the past quarter century, saw street celebrations which lasted well into Sunday night.

Apple ‘In Talks’ To Buy Twitter For £460m

The rumours, which report the proposed deal at £460m ($700m), broke on two widely-read technology bogs, TechCrunch and ValleyWag.

Both sites report a “realiable source” and imply the rumour is more credible than others that have spread about the site in recent months.

“Apple is in late stage negotiations to buy Twitter and is hoping to announce it at (their annual World Wide Developers’ Conference) in June,” the TechCrunch source is quoted as saying.

Twitter has grown in popularity at a phenomenal rate in the past few months and now has over 25 million users.

Apple’s boss Steve Jobs

A source close to the company has even claimed the site’s audience is growing by as much as 40% a week, after being mentioned on the popular Oprah Winfrey talk show.

The new rumours, if true, are significant as Twitter has strongly resisted interest from a number of other companies.

Late last year, Facebook failed to close a deal for the website after offering around £330m ($500m) of its stock.

Around a month ago, Google were also rumoured to be in talks to buy the site, but no deal materialised.

But despite the rumours, TechCrunch’s Mike Arrington has written on his blog that it is likely Twitter will resist selling – regardless of the price offered.

He wrote: “I’d like to see Twitter spread its wings a little longer and see what it can become.

“It’ll be hard to do that as a subsidiary of Google, Apple, or anyone else for that matter.

“If Twitter wants to stay independent that’s ju st fine with me.”

Google Announces Search Engine Changes

Web giant Google has unveiled changes to its search engine to let users to “dig deeper” into results.

The developments include automatic tables of information on a subject, arrange results by date and genre, and a GPS phone app for naming stars in the sky.

Google believes the changes will keep their search engine ahead of rivals such as Yahoo and Microsoft’s Live search.

Google’s new search options

They currently have 63% of the US search market to Yahoo’s 20%.

Vice President Marissa Mayer said search technology is “in its infancy” and Google engineers hope to identify the next big thing first.

Innovations unveiled include Google Squared, which does not return page results but arranges what appear to be facts from across the web.

For example, a search for breeds of dog could return a table of types, names and sizes.

Rich Snippets offers more detail in the preview text below web page links.

This is aimed at those searching for reviews, as it could offer average scores or price ranges for a restaurant.

Google’s Sky Map phone app

The Search Options feature filters results depending on genre, allowing the search to be refined to forum discussions, reviews or videos, and also by date.

“As people get more sophisticated at search they are coming to us to solve more complex problems,” the company said in a blog post.

“To stay on top of this, we have spent a lot of time looking at how we can better understand the wide range of information that’s on the web and quickly connect people to just the nuggets they need at that moment.”

Another innovation announced at Google’s Searchology event was the phone app Sky Map.

Designed for Android mobiles, it uses GPS technology to identify the stars of the solar system.

Sarah Palin And The Beauty Queen

Were you wondering what had happened to Sarah Palin?

Well, the former Vice Presidential candidate is still out there fighting on the big issues facing America.

Today, for example, she weighed in on the important issue of the Miss California USA controversy.

Earlier this week, it was decided that Carrie Prejean could keep her crown and sash.

This was despite her televised comments against gay marriage and a growing catalogue of racy photos emerging on the internet.

In a statement, the Alaska Governor writes: “The liberal onslaught of malicious attacks against Carrie Prejean for expressing her opinion is despicable.”

“Carrie and I spoke soon after the attacks started; I can relate as a liberal target myself. What I find so remarkable is that these politically-motivated attacks fail to show that what Carrie and I believe is also what President Obama and Secretary Clinton believe – marriage is between a man and a woman.

“I applaud Donald Trump for standing with Carrie during this time. And I respect Carrie for standing strong and staying true to herself, and for not letting those who disagree with her deny her protection under the nation’s First Amendment Rights.
“Our Constitution protects us all – not just those who agree with the far left.”

Governor Palin herself was famously a beauty queen in Alaska.

But her words demonstrate precisely how this row, about a beauty queen’s personal opinions and some dodgy snaps, has become a political talking point.

If that seems extraordinary, it is also a sign of just how polarised the US media has become.
