Brazil grab FIFA Confederations Cup 2009. Brazil 3 – 2 USA

JOHANNESBURG  — Lucio scored a late goal to give Brazil a 3-2 win over the upstart United States and a second straight Confederations Cup title Sunday.

FIFA cup

The Brazil captain headed in a corner from Elano in the 84th minute to help the five-time world champions hold off a spirited American team that had taken a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Luis Fabiano scored two goals in the second half to put Brazil back in the match after Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan had given the Americans the lead.

South Africa Brazil Confed Cup SoccerBrazil, which won its third Confederations Cup title, looked like a beaten team in the first half, creating little and being constantly stymied by the United States defense and goalkeeper Tim Howard.

But Fabiano started the comeback in the 46th minute as Brazil’s “Beautiful Game” burst into life. The striker collected a pass from Ramires before turning and shooting past defender Jay DeMerit for his fourth goal of the tournament.

He added a fifth in the 74th, heading in a rebound after Kaka’s cross was kicked against the crossbar by Robinho.

Dempsey, who also scored in the 2-0 semifinal win over Spain, gave the Americans the lead in the 10th minute by redirecting a cross from Jonathan Spector. Donovan added the second by finishing off some nice passing play with Charlie Davies on a fast counterattack in the 27th.

Spector started the unthinkable after only 10 minutes, running down the right and sending a low cross into the area. Dempsey, who had plenty of room to maneuver, raised his right leg and put just enough of a touch on the ball to alter the direction and send it past a diving Julio Cesar.

Donovan then got possession at his own end shortly after Maicon had sent in a corner for Brazil from the right. The United States midfielder ran up the middle, passed to Davies and then reclaimed the ball from his teammate before beating Julio Cesar.

The Americans appeared to get some luck in the 60th when Kaka headed a cross from Andre Santos to the near post. Howard stepped back into his goal and knocked the shot off the underside of the crossbar and then grabbed it safely in his arms.

Kaka yelled at the referee and his linesman, arguing that the ball has crossed the line before Howard was able to get to it, and television replays appeared to show he was correct.

In the third-place match, Spain rallied to beat host South Africa 3-2 in extra time in Rustenburg.

Nokia N97 Mobile Phone Launched

Nokia launches its flagship model, aiming to deliver a very personalized internet experience through mobile computer Nokia N97. With a challenge to Apple’s 3G S iPhone, Nokia promises not to disappoint its loyal customer following both in terms of impressive list of features with cutting-edge technology as well as a new yet appealing looks and design.

The looks of the new Nokia N97 is dominated by a tilting 3.5-inch bright touch screen display with least number of function keys (that’s exactly what I always loved). The screen resolution is 640 by 360 pixels. On the top of the N97 you will see the power button and 3.5mm headphone jack. The unique feature is the sliding QWERTY keyboard and customizable home screen that can be tailored with lots of widgets and you can stay connected with live information. The widgets can include social networking sites Face book and shopping sites as well. Nokia N97 provides with excellent multimedia features. It’s a 5MP camera with dual LED flash and Carl Zeiss lens that appeals the smart phone users.

Do not forget to check on the memory of this iPhone killer. As you compare Nokia N97 with any other smart phones, the new Nokia N97 comes with 32GB memory and an additional memory of up to 16 GB with the micro SD. The N97 handset from Nokia also has the ability to play flash files and support flash videos as well.

This barely 150g-weighing Nokia N97 still has some flipsides if I can mention here. The handset should have come with slightly larger keys; you actually slip and skid over these freakingly annoying smaller keys. But the Nokia N97 supports HSDPA/3G, runs on Quadband GSM networks and uses Symbian’s S60 5th edition. The handset comes with in-built Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS system as well.

England Won the ICC Women’s T2O World Cup Finals

New Zealand captain Aimee Watkins said England were “leaps and bounds” ahead in women’s cricket after the hosts won their second straight major final to lift the World Twenty20 trophy here at Lord’s.

England, who beat New Zealand to win the 50-over World Cup in Sydney in March, agaian proved too strong for the White Ferns at Lord’s on Sunday in a six-wicket success.

Fast bowler Katherine Brunt took three wickets for six runs as New Zealand, previously unbeaten at the tournament, were bowled out for just 85.

England then saw star batsman Claire Taylor make 39 not out as they won with three overs to spare.

Several members of the England team are on contracts to coach cricket with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and promote the sport in schools through the ‘Chance to Shine’ initiative.

These contracts enable the players to participate in major tournaments without jeopardising their income.

It is a set-up that has helped propel England to the forefront of the women’s game and Watkins said: “The infrastructure they have now and the amount of money the ECB has poured into them has put them ahead by leaps and bounds of other top three nations (Australia, India and New Zealand).”

New Zealand coach Gary Stead added: “England set the standards at the moment. They’ve won two World Cups and today felt a little bit like the amateurs playing the professionals.

“It’s the first time we’ve been knocked over. They are setting the standards at the moment and it’s something we need to get better at.”

England captain Charlotte Edwards, who is looking forward to leading the team in a successful defence of the Ashes in the one-off Test against Australia later this season, said: “It was a lot easier than I thought it might be.

“New Zealand were playing good cricket coming into this game and I would have taken 85 coming into today.

“A lot of credit has to go to our attack because they bowled superbly well, the best bowling performance of the tournament.

“The 50-over World Cup was the ultimate prize but this, for the profile of the game and the coverage we’re probably going to get around the world, it’s probably up there with that.

“We’re just delighted. We came back from the World Cup and we wanted this trophy and now we’ve got it to show the 50-over wasn’t a fluke.”

England showed they could chase a stiff target when, in Friday’s semi-final, they made 165 for two to beat Australia by eight wickets at the Oval.

“I think on Friday we surprised a lot of people,” Edwards said.

“It was probably the perfect game with it being England against Australia and winning in the last over so I think we’re definitely showing that women’s cricket is a force to be reckoned with and hopefully we can get more and more people watching us this summer.”

Fired-up Pakistan lift World T20 title

Pakistan won their first major title in 17 years when they stunned Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the World Twenty20 final at a sell-out Lord’s here on Sunday.

pakistan 2009 t20 champions

Seamer Abdul Razzaq claimed three wickets as Pakistan bowled and fielded aggressively to restrict Sri Lanka to 138-6, then coasted home easily with eight deliveries to spare.

Shahid Afridi hit an unbeaten 54 off 40 balls, his second consecutive half-century, and former captain Shoaib Malik made 24 not out during a match-winning partnership of 76 for the undefeated third wicket.

Pakistan, runners-up to India in the final of the inaugural World Twenty20 in South Africa two years ago, ended Sri Lanka’s unbeaten run in the tournament with style.

t20 championsPakistan last won an official multi-nation tournament in 1992 when Imran Khan’s team lifted the World Cup by beating England in the final at the Melbourne cricket ground in Australia.

The win by Younus Khan’s team gave Pakistanis back home reason to cheer as the cricket-mad nation has been deprived of international tours due to security concerns in the volatile nation.

The International Cricket Council has already ruled out holding World Cup matches in Pakistan in 2011 following the militant attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore on March 3.

Afridi paid tribute to skipper Younus.

“Younus gave me great confidence,” said Afridi. “I told him that I wanted to bat at number three in the order and he said OK, if you’re confident just go and play. Don’t worry about anything.”

Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara said: “I’m proud of the way we competed. I believe we can go forward from here,” he said.

“We’ll take this and come back stronger in next year’s tournament. We have the best bowling unit in the world.”

Pakistani openers Kamran Akmal and Shahzaib Hasan ensured there were no early scares as they put on 48 for the first wicket in seven overs.

Sanath Jayasuriya broke through with his first delivery in the next over when he beat Akmal in the air with his left-arm spin and had him stumped for 37 off 28 balls.

Jayasuriya then took a catch to get rid of Shahzaib off Muttiah Muralitharan for 19, but Afridi and Malik took Pakistan home amid loud celebrations from their fans in the stands.

Sri Lanka were dealt quick blows after Sangakkara won the toss and elected to take first strike on a slow wicket.

The Lankans slumped to 2-2 in the first nine balls and that became 34-4 before Sangakkara himself led the rescue act with a defiant unbeaten 64 from 52 balls.

Sangakkara and Angelo Mathews put on 68 runs for the unbroken seventh wicket as Sri Lanka plundered 59 runs in the final five overs.

Mathews returned unbeaten on 35 off 24 balls.

Pakistan got off to a sensational start when teenage fast bowler Mohammad Aamir sent back the in-form Tillekaratne Dilshan with the fifth ball of the match.

Dilshan, the tournament’s leading scorer with 317 runs, miscued a pull shot off the speedy left-armer and was caught at backward square-leg by Shahzaib Hasan for zero.

Four balls later, Shahzaib grabbed his second catch at mid-off as Jehan Mubarak skied a leading edge off Razzaq, who shared the new ball with Aamir.

Jayasuriya counter-attacked with a six and four in Razzaq’s second over, but the bowler hit back two balls later as the left-handed veteran edged a ball on to his stumps after making 17.

Razzaq, who replaced the injured Yasir Arafat after ending his links with the rebel Indian Cricket League, struck again in his third over when Misbah-ul Haq dived to his right at slip to remove Mahela Jayawardene for one.

Movie Review: Angels and Demons

Angels and Demons is a direct sequel to The Da Vinci Code and based on the book of the same name (though Dan Brown fans will tell you Angels is actually supposed to be the prequel of The Da Vinci Code).

Angels and Demons brings back symbologist (aka glorified scavenger hunter)Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) on another yet mystery involving Catholicism. On the eve of the latest’s Pope’s death, the four cardinals vying for the Papacy have been kidnapped by a member of a secret organization known as The Illuminati. The assailant promises to kill one cardinal for every hour until midnight when he sets off an anti-matter bomb somewhere in Vatican City. Now, it is a race against time as Langdon searches for the Cardinals and tries desperately to stop the bomb before it kills thousands.

Written by David Koepp (Spider-Man) and Akiva Goldsman, Angels is a fast-paced thrill ride from beginning to end. One part National Treasure, one part Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?, the movie starts off with a murder and never gives you a chance to breathe. Even some of the more dialogue-filled scenes are quick. It is not so much that the lines are delivered quickly, but rather there is so much substance in it, viewers really need to listen to the dialogue, comprehend it, and try to figure out where Langdon will go next. Sure, moviegoers do not have to play along, but how can you resist? The whole movie is a mystery and everyone loves a good mystery.

Hanks reprises his role as Langdon and looks very comfortable in the role. He recites his dialogue quickly and with enough force to give the impression that he knows what he is talking about. Plus, this is Tom Hanks we’re talking about here. Every movie he is in he gives his best possibly performance and this movie is no exception to the rule. The supporting actors, Ewan McGregor and Stellan Skarsgard , are both equally great in their individual roles and more than hold their own in the presence of Hanks, but this movie is really Hanks’ baby.

With a movie that is constantly driven by dialogue and fast-paced scenes, you need a director that can balance both and Ron Howard is certainly the right man for the job. He injects a ton of energy into each shot, whether it is a dialogue driven scene or an action scene. The camera is constantly moving and every shot and special effect has a purpose. There are no slow motion action sequences just for the sake of a slow motion action sequence. Every scene and frame is methodical. Howard is definitely an old school director, with shooting scenes that are simple but are visually impressive. Watch what he does with a simple pair of shoes and you can tell Howard is cut above the rest.

While visually impressive and entertaining, even the prettiest rose has its sharp thorns. Despite all the history infused into the picture, it is still at its core an action film with its share of illogical and impossible occurrences. Men jump out of planes, hitting various buildings on their way down and live to talk about it, and anti-matter bombs exists. Also, while Langdon is the hero of the picture, he hardly acts like one. At the first sight of a gun fight, our main protagonist flees and looks for place to hide. It is a small gripe, but it is odd to see a hero essentially run away from a battle. If you can overlook these small issues, they should have no problems enjoying the film.

Angels and Demons is a well written, well-directed brainy action movie. Fans of Hanks or of the Dan Brown books will be more than pleased with this adaptation of the book. Let the Angels guide you to this film and you will be happy with the result.

Rossi ends US dream of first Italy victory

The United States looked on course for a first ever victory over Italy on Monday when a young striker from Teaneck, New Jersey stole it from them.

valentino-rossiGiuseppe Rossi, born near New York to Italian immigrants and now wearing the colors of Italy, scored a 59th minute equalizer with a thumping shot from 26 meters (yards) less than two minutes after coming on as a substitute. He made his first appearance for Italy last October.

After Daniele De Rossi added a second with another long range strike, Rossi, sold to Spain’s Villareal by Manchester United two years ago, collected a pass from Andrea Pirlo with a powerful first time strike to complete Italy’s 3-1 victory at the Confederations Cup.

Landon Donovan had given the Americans a deserved 41st minute lead from the penalty spot with his 40th international goal even though Bob Bradley’s team was down to 10 men after a harsh red card given to Ricardo Clark a few minutes earlier for a foul on Gennaro Gattuso.

With the Italians looking uninspired even against 10 men, coach Marcello Lippi sent on Rossi and the game turned.

The 22-year-old striker’s arrival gave the Italians a far more potent threat in attack alongside Alberto Gilardino and Vincenzo Iaquinta and the American defense, which had given barely a chance, came under strong presser in the last 30 minutes.

They succumbed to the two long range shots and an inspired move and now the US has lost four times to Italy alongside three ties.

Bradley’s team didn’t look like a side down to 10 men as they continued to hold the Italians in midfield. But the emergence of Rossi changed everything.

The striker with joint Italian-US citizenship took the ball from Benny Feilhaber on halfway and ran 15 meters before firing a powerful left footer that flew past his former Manchester United teammate Tim Howard inside the post.

De Rossi’s second matched Rossi’s goal, a 30-meter drive which flew past two defenders and inside Howard’s far post.

And in the fourth minute of injury time, Pirlo danced round a defender on the left and floated a ball back to Rossi who drove it powerfully past Howard for the third.

Dhoni blames batting for Indias shock exit

A dejected India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni held his batting colleagues responsible for the team’s aborted title defence in the Twenty20 World Cup and said there cannot be any excuse for their failure.
Chasing 154 against the hosts in the do-or-die Super Eights match, India eventually halted at 150 for five to crash out of title defence and Dhoni had no doubt that the batsmen let the team down.

“We failed in batting. If the opposition scores 153 and you cannot achieve that on a track like this, I don’t think there can be any excuse. You just cannot explain that,” Dhoni curtly said.

“We lost simply because we did not bat well. I’m rather happy with the performance of the bowlers,” he added.

Dhoni, however, was candid enough to admit that England bowlers had bounced India out of the match, sending down short-pitch stuff quite consistently.

“They started really well. They looked aggressive and used the bouncers really well. All of a sudden our batsmen could not change their game plan.

“They used short deliveries very well – bouncers and slow bouncers. That really did the job for them,” he said.

On whether Yuvraj Singh should have batted up the order, Dhoni said, “He could have. But we thought (Ravindra) Jadeja will go in and stabilise the innings. Once me or Yuvi is out there, we can achieve a run rate like nine or 10 an over, since we have Yusuf Pathan and Harbhajan Singh down the order.

“I think more than that, we lost wickets at crucial times. First Jadeja got out and then unfortunately Yuvraj too got out. The timing of those dismissals was crucial,” he added.

Asked if the team missed the injured Virender Sehwag since makeshift opener Rohit Sharma could not replicate his pool stage form in the Super Eights, Dhoni conceded it was difficult to replace the Delhi batsman.

“Sehwag is a kind of player you cannot really replace and we did miss him. But Rohit was doing the job for us and he scored in quite a few games. Of course with Sehwag there, the batting order looks different. We missed him because of injury and you cannot do much about that,” he said.
