FC Barcelona vs. Manchester United Champions League Final 2009

FC Barcelona have won the UEFA Champions League for the third time in history. Goals from Samuel Eto’o and Lionel Messi led Josep Guardiola’s side to a rather easy 2-0 victory over Manchester United.

Manchester United took the initiative in the opening phase and had a good chance to open the score in the second minute. A free kick from Cristiano Ronaldo almost surprised Victor Valdes but the keeper reacted in time to parry the shot, for defenders to clear the danger.

After ten minutes of play at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico, it was FC Barcelona’s first real attack that earned the Catalans the opening goal. Samuel Eto’o cut past Nemanja Vidic and then struck on goal. Keeper Edwin van der Sar touched it but the shot was too powerful to block completely.

Barcelona controlled the game in the rest of the first half without particular difficulties, as United seemed to be suffering from the deficit and failed to get anywhere near the opposing goal.

The start of the second half saw an even stronger Barcelona who created one chance after the other. Eight minutes after the break, the Spaniards had a free kick just outside the penalty area and Xavi’s powerful effort bounced off the right post.

But Barcelona got their deserved second goal on 70 minutes. Xavi’s cross from the right side found Lionel Messi, and the Argentinian striker headed past Van der Sar for 2-0.

With a comfortable lead in the pocket, Barcelona continued to attack and create chances, and would have scored several more goals if it wasn’t for Van der Sar, who made a number of saves to avoid a larger defeat.

Apart from winning the trophy for the third time, after 1992 and 2006, Barcelona also become the first Spanish side to win the ‘treble’, as they had already secured the Primera Division and Copa del Rey titles.

Deccan Chargers are DLF IPL 2009 Winners | IPL 2 Winner Results

Deccan Chargers Hyderabad are the DLF IPL 2009 Winners. RCB lose a humdinger in the finals of IPL 2009.

Earlier Anil Kumble won the toss and chose to field first in the finals of the IPL 2009.

In the first innings it was Anil Kumble who did the early damage picking up prized wicket of Adam Gilchrist and in all he seemed to be the best bowler of the side taking 4 wickets. A devastating spin magic and he could restrict the Deccan Chargers to 143-6 in the final of the Indian Premier League 2009 at the Wanderers on Sunday.

His wickets included dangerous Adam Gilchrist in his very first then devious Andrew Symonds and then the in-from Rohit Sharma and. Gibbs hardly got any support although he remained unbeaten at 53.

Royal Challengers started off poor chasing a target of 144, losing the wicket of Kallis yet again cheaply. Then the damage was done by Pragyan Ojha who scalped the wickets of Manish Pandey and Roelof van der Merwe and Harmeet Singh did damage by claiming Dravid and Boucher and then on it had become a tough asking from Royal Challengers. RP Singh never gave room to open the face of bat. They failed to reach the 144 run target and remained 139/9. Deccan Chargers, the most resilient of the teams won the DLF IPL 2009 Championship.

Prabhakaran alive, claims pro-LTTE website

Tamil Tigers chief Velupillai Prabhakaran is “alive and safe”, a website sympathetic to the rebels claimed Tuesday.

The Sri Lankan military Monday said that Prabhakaran was shot dead while fleeing the battle zone in the island’s north.prabakaran

Prabhakaran, the feared leader of Sri Lanka’s ruthless Tamil Tigers, was killed Monday with two top aides, ending one of the world’s longest running insurgencies that bled the island nation for over a quarter century, the military declared.

While rejecting Colombo’s claim of Prabhakaran being killed, and “assuring his safety and well-being”, LTTE’s International Relations Head S. Pathmanathan Tuesday accused Colombo of treachery in the killing of the political wing leaders B. Nadesan and S. Puleedevan.

There was no independent confirmation of the report in the pro-LTTE website TamilNet. Sri Lankan officials have in the past denounced as propaganda similar claims by TamilNet.

Pathmanathan in the statement said: “I wish to inform the global Tamil community distressed witnessing the final events of the war that our beloved leader Velupillai Pirapaharan is alive and safe. He will continue to lead the quest for dignity and freedom for the Tamil people.”

Categorically rejecting Prabhakaran’s death claims, he asked “the Tamil community to be vigilant and to exercise maximum restraint whilst grieving for the loss of Tamil civilian lives in the barbaric conduct of the final chapters of this battle”.

Prabhakaran’s face apparently caught fire and he breathed his last in a small stretch of land near the coast in Mullaitivu district, an area about 400 km from here which he had made his hideout a long time ago, building seemingly impregnable underground bunkers.

The reported death – which came hours after his elder son Charles Anthony, who headed the group’s IT wing and was being groomed to succeed him, was also killed – marks the collapse of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), which Prabhakaran set up in 1976 and which became one of the most well-armed and ruthless insurgent groups in the world with its own army, navy and air force.

It also came three days before the 18th anniversary of the assassination of former Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was blown up by a woman Tamil Tiger suicide bomber at an election rally near Chennai in India May 21, 1991.

Sri Lankan army chief, Lt Gen Sarath Fonseka, told state-owned TV: “We have now completed our task of liberating the north and east from terrorists.” Fonseka was badly wounded when an LTTE suicide bomber sneaked into the fortified army headquarters in Colombo and tried to blow him up.

Also reportedly killed Monday with Prabhakaran was Shanmugalingam Shivashankar alias Pottu Amman, the dreaded chief of the intelligence wing that was responsible for all the high profile assassinations the Tigers carried out in its long and murderous history.

Other key LTTE leaders whose bodies were found Monday were Soosai, the LTTE’s naval wing leader, Balasingham Nadesan, who headed its political wing, S. Puleedevan, head of the Peace Secretariat, Ramesh, a military leader, Ilango, chief of the LTTE police, and Kapil Amman from the LTTE intelligence wing.

LTTE Leader Prabhakaran Killed And Body Found

Sri Lanka’s state television announced on Monday that Tamil Tiger rebel chief Velupillai Prabhakaran has been killed. However, there is no official confirmation of his death.Prabhakaran’s death would spell the end of a more than three-decade quest by the rebel leader for a separate state for minority Tamils across northern and eastern Sri Lanka.

Rupavahini television, the state broadcaster, broke into its regular programming on Monday afternoon to announce Prabakharan’s death. They gave no details of how he was killed.

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan Army Chief Lt Gen Sareth Fonseka has said that troops have defeated the last pockets of rebel resistance in the north and are working to identify Prabhakaran’s body from among the dead.

The government information department also sent a text message to cell phones across the country announcing Prabhakaran was killed along with his top deputies.

High alert has been sounded in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo after Prabhakaran’s death.

Sri Lanka military has also announced that it has now controlled all of country’s territory.

Earlier, Sri Lankan military officials had informed that Prabhakaran was killed by government forces this morning.

Two officials had confirmed Prabhakaran’s death. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the media.

Prabhakaran and two of his top commanders, know as Soosai and Pottu Amman, drove in an armour-plated van accompanied by a bus filled with armed rebels toward approaching Sri Lankan forces Monday morning, the officials said. A two-hour firefight broke out before the military launched a rocket at the van, the officials said.

Troops pulled Prabhakaran’s body from the van and identified it as that of the rebel leader, they said.

“It was confirmed Prabhakaran was killed when trying to flee in an ambulance before dawn. We are waiting for the official announcement by the President,” a military source said on condition of anonymity.

Earlier in the day, four senior rebel leaders were killed in fighting.

They included the head of the Tigers’ political wing, Balasingham Nadesan, the head of rebels’ peace secretariat Seevaratnam Puleedevan, and a military leader known as Ramesh.

The Army also says it has found the body of Prabhakaran’s son, Charles Anthony.

Sri Lanka’s hawkish President, Mahinda Rajapakse, will open a new session of Parliament on Tuesday with an address that will officially mark the ending of the war.

The conflict has left more than 70,000 dead from pitched battles, suicide attacks, bomb strikes and assassinations. The LTTE emerged in the 1970s, with all-out war breaking out in the early 1980s.

The capital Colombo, which has been frequently hit by Tiger suicide attacks over the past quarter century, saw street celebrations which lasted well into Sunday night.

Apple ‘In Talks’ To Buy Twitter For £460m

The rumours, which report the proposed deal at £460m ($700m), broke on two widely-read technology bogs, TechCrunch and ValleyWag.

Both sites report a “realiable source” and imply the rumour is more credible than others that have spread about the site in recent months.

“Apple is in late stage negotiations to buy Twitter and is hoping to announce it at (their annual World Wide Developers’ Conference) in June,” the TechCrunch source is quoted as saying.

Twitter has grown in popularity at a phenomenal rate in the past few months and now has over 25 million users.

Apple’s boss Steve Jobs

A source close to the company has even claimed the site’s audience is growing by as much as 40% a week, after being mentioned on the popular Oprah Winfrey talk show.

The new rumours, if true, are significant as Twitter has strongly resisted interest from a number of other companies.

Late last year, Facebook failed to close a deal for the website after offering around £330m ($500m) of its stock.

Around a month ago, Google were also rumoured to be in talks to buy the site, but no deal materialised.

But despite the rumours, TechCrunch’s Mike Arrington has written on his blog that it is likely Twitter will resist selling – regardless of the price offered.

He wrote: “I’d like to see Twitter spread its wings a little longer and see what it can become.

“It’ll be hard to do that as a subsidiary of Google, Apple, or anyone else for that matter.

“If Twitter wants to stay independent that’s ju st fine with me.”

Google Announces Search Engine Changes

Web giant Google has unveiled changes to its search engine to let users to “dig deeper” into results.

The developments include automatic tables of information on a subject, arrange results by date and genre, and a GPS phone app for naming stars in the sky.

Google believes the changes will keep their search engine ahead of rivals such as Yahoo and Microsoft’s Live search.

Google’s new search options

They currently have 63% of the US search market to Yahoo’s 20%.

Vice President Marissa Mayer said search technology is “in its infancy” and Google engineers hope to identify the next big thing first.

Innovations unveiled include Google Squared, which does not return page results but arranges what appear to be facts from across the web.

For example, a search for breeds of dog could return a table of types, names and sizes.

Rich Snippets offers more detail in the preview text below web page links.

This is aimed at those searching for reviews, as it could offer average scores or price ranges for a restaurant.

Google’s Sky Map phone app

The Search Options feature filters results depending on genre, allowing the search to be refined to forum discussions, reviews or videos, and also by date.

“As people get more sophisticated at search they are coming to us to solve more complex problems,” the company said in a blog post.

“To stay on top of this, we have spent a lot of time looking at how we can better understand the wide range of information that’s on the web and quickly connect people to just the nuggets they need at that moment.”

Another innovation announced at Google’s Searchology event was the phone app Sky Map.

Designed for Android mobiles, it uses GPS technology to identify the stars of the solar system.

Manchester United Clinches 3rd Straight League Title

MANCHESTER, England – Manchester United won a third straight Premier League title today with a 0-0 draw against Arsenal that produced the point required to clinch its record-equalling 18th championship.

When Sir Alex Ferguson took over at Old Trafford in 1986 he declared he wanted to knock the then dominant Liverpool “off their perch,” and his side has now matched Liverpool’s title record.

“That was the target because they were the greatest side in the land,” Ferguson said. “But I never thought we could get 11 titles – never in a million years.”

The 67-year-old Scot said he had no plans to retire any time soon.

“It makes you want to go on forever,” Ferguson said.

Ryan Giggs has been part of United’s team for each of its 11 Premier League triumphs masterminded by Ferguson since the 1992-3 season.

“It’s been a special time at the club since the manager took over and we’ve managed to win so much,” Giggs said. “Hopefully we can carry on.”

Giggs won’t have long to wait for another medal. The Welshman can win a third Champions League title – and deliver Ferguson’s 26th major trophy with United – in the May 27 final against Barcelona.

Today’s draw put United out of reach of second-place Liverpool, which is seven points behind and has two games to play.

Britain Soccer Premier League

“It was the longest 90 minutes in history,” Ferguson said. “There was only one save in the match – it was a cautious match.”

Despite a lacklustre game, the final whistle set off a massive title celebration at Old Trafford as the team was presented with the Premier League trophy on the field. The players hugged and sprayed champagne on each other.

The trophy was carried onto the field by four soldiers who have just returned from a four-month tour of duty in Afghanistan.

And as the medals were presented and fireworks exploded, the rain that had lashed onto the pitch throughout the match cleared and Old Trafford was bathed in sunshine.

The title is Gary Neville’s eighth and the 34-year-old captain immediately set his sights on next year.

“(Liverpool) pushed us really hard this season. Next season, we’ve got our work cut out to go and do it again,” the defender said.

While powered this season by goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and top-quality performances from strikers Rooney and Carlos Tevez, United also had a rock solid defence which led to goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar setting a British record by going 1,311 minutes without conceding a goal.

United’s players had a wobble in March, however, when they lost to Liverpool and Fulham before starting a winning streak that took it clear of its rivals.

The post-match focus was also on the players who might be leaving Old Trafford in the off-season, most notably Tevez and Ronaldo, who was denied a transfer to Real Madrid last summer.

When Tevez was substituted in the second half he applauded the fans and seemed to wave goodbye.

Asked if he was leaving the club, the Argentina striker said in broken English: “Maybe goodbye… It’s very difficult.”

As for Ronaldo, the world player of the year was non-committal when asked whether he was still eager to move on.

“The supporters screaming and singing your name, it’s amazing, but the future you never know,” he said.
